Peace Area Load Shedding RAS

The north area of BC Hydro has seen significant load growth over the past decade. This is expected to continue, necessitating a new Remedial Action Scheme (RAS) to handle load shedding during major system disturbances.

Nextgen was responsible for installing, testing, and commissioning much of the new scheme.

After the installation phase, our main tasks revolved around testing and commissioning the new communications equipment including multiple microwave links and their associated support infrastructure: battery banks, dehydrators, and alarm concentrators. We were also responsible for changes to existing, in-service line protections at multiple substations.

One of the challenges faced on projects of this magnitude is modifying and commissioning in-service P&C and Telecommunications equipment. Fortunately, brownfield work is a core expertise of Nextgen.
